After further investigation, we have discovered that this issue was a result of a high number of connections to our database due to a very high load being placed on our web application servers. This load was coming from a free trial account that was started by an individual in Russia who appears to have been running a script that was sending user invitation emails.
We have terminated the offending account, and have also added a block of the IP address that was being used.
Over the next day or two, we will be evaluating what modifications we can make in order to prevent nefarious activity like this in the future.
